Our School

Our Mission

The Mission of the Brighter Choice Charter School for Boys is to ensure that BCCS scholars have the same opportunities for future success as scholars attending the best public schools in the region. There are 3 significant components to achieving this mission:

  • Exemplary instruction that ensures competency and mastery in reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Focus on the development of social, behavioral, and organizational skills necessary for future school success.
  • An education beyond the basics that includes performing arts, visual arts, science, and history.

Our History

Established in September 2002, the companion Brighter Choice elementary schools offered a new model for urban elementary education, one that joins high academic standards, a nurturing and structured environment and heightened accountability.  The schools opened their doors on September 3, 2002, serving 90 of the more than 250 applications received for the initial spots.  The schools shared one facility located at 250 Central Avenue, a historically preserved former public school building dating back to 1890.  This location remains the home of Brighter Choice Charter School for Girls.

In September 2007, the Brighter Choice Charter School for Boys moved to a newly remodeled and expanded building located at 116 North Lake Avenue, one city block north of our original location.  The new building offers all the features of the original building along with a state of the art conference room, The Eve, dedicated to Arthur O. Eve in February 2008.  The school continues to serve young men in Kindergarten through 4th grade.

Parent Right to Know Letter

Dear Parents and Guardians:

The federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 allows parents of students who attend Title I funded schools to request certification information about the qualifications of the teachers and paraprofessionals assigned to their child.  Under the law, you may contact this school and request information regarding which subjects your child’s teachers and paraprofessionals are certified to teach.  To be certified in the state of New York, teachers have to pass a series of examinations, hold a Bachelor’s Degree and have completed a concentration of college credits in the certification subject area of their assignment.  Currently this school does not employ any paraprofessionals.

In the event your child has been taught for four or more weeks by a teacher who is not highly qualified, we will notify you directly, and in a timely manner.

If you wish to request this information, please contact our Parent Coordinator at 518-694-8200 for the appropriate form.

Sincerely,

Darryl Williams, Principal
