The only all-girls tuition-free
elementary school serving the
Capital Region.

Our History

Established in September 2002, Brighter Choice Charter School for Girls and Brighter Choice Charter School for Boys, continues to provide a new model for single-gender, urban elementary education, one that joins high academic standards, a nurturing and structured environment, and heightened accountability. The Girls' School is located at 250 Central Avenue in Albany, New York, and the Boys' School is located at 116 North Lake Ave in Albany, New York. Both serve children in Kindergarten thru 4th Grade.

Mission Statement

The Mission of the Brighter Choice Charter School (BCCS) is to ensure that BCCS students have the same opportunities for further success as students attending the best public schools in the region. There are 3 significant components to achieving this mission:

  • Exemplary instruction that ensures competency and mastery in reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Focus on the development of social, behavioral, and organization skills necessary for future school success.
  • An education beyond the basics that includes: Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Sciences, and History.

Message from The Principal

December 12, 2011

Dear Families & Supporters,

Darryl Williams, PrincipalI would like to introduce myself to you as the Brighter Choice Charter School for Girls' Interim Principal. While I have established relationships with many of you over the years, I must express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to serve your scholars. As many of you may know, I have worked for Brighter Choice since its inception in September 2002; when the boys' school and girls' school shared one building and one administration at 250 Central Avenue. During this time, I became quite familiar with the scholars, families and staff of both schools. In September 2007, the boys' school moved to 116 North Lake Avenue and I moved with them as their Principal.

For the past five years, I have led the Brighter Choice Charter School for Boys in becoming one of the most recognizable single-gender programs in the state. The boys' program has been acknowledged as one of the highest performing public schools in New York for several years now, and I am excited to share my work with scholars, families and teachers here at the girls' school.

First and foremost, my responsibility will be to further develop instructional quality and build systems and processes necessary for our school's success. As the Board of Trustees continues its national search for a permanent principal, I will serve scholars attending the girls' school in the same manner for which I have served scholars attending the boys' elementary and middle school programs. Scholars attending the girls' school will be held accountable for meeting the expectations set forth in our program, and teachers will be held accountable for providing the highest quality instruction.

Finally, I would like to thank you for entrusting Brighter Choice with your daughter's education. We pride ourselves on providing our scholars the exceptional education they deserve. I appreciate your patience and anticipate your full support. You may reach me by calling the girls' school at 694-4100 or boys' school at 694-8200. I continuously check my messages. I look forward to our work together this school year.

Warm regards,

Darryl Williams
Interim Principal
