YMCA After-school Progam

The Capital District YMCA is one of the area’s premier nonprofit organizations dedicated to strengthening the foundations of our community.  The YMCA’s programs and services focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.  Brighter Choice Charter Schools have partnered with the YMCA to provide an after-school program for families that need support with their working schedules.  The after-school program, for both the Girls’ and Boys’ school, is held at the Boys’ school.  Students have the opportunity to complete homework and participate in different activities throughout the week.

Backpack Program

Brighter Choice Charter School for Girls has partnered up with the Northeast Regional Food Bank in efforts to alleviate hunger. The backpack program provides a backpack of non-perishable, easy to prepare food to selected children every Friday to eat throughout the weekend. The program runs from September to June.

Wave Riders Grief Counseling Program

Brighter Choice Charter School for Girls has partnered up with Albany Community Hospice to provide a grief support program at the school.  Wave Riders is a 6 week program to assist children to “ride the waves” of grief for children who have lost a loved one. The program is designed to provide a safe, supportive environment for children to come together in a small group setting to share their feelings and develop skills to cope with their loss. Students use art, music and discussion during their 1 hour group sessions based around grieving.

Albany Police Athletic League Programs

The Albany Police Athletic League (PAL) Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides Albany youth with fun and safe educational, recreational, and athletic programs during their non-school hours.  PAL serves all of Albany’s school children, including those who attend public, private, parochial, and charter schools.  Some of the programs offered at Brighter Choice for Girls are karate, Cooking Club, Arts and Crafts Club, cheerleading and basketball.   Club participants are chosen by lottery and given the opportunity to participate in different club sessions.
