Success in school is not limited to academics, but includes the development of social and emotional skills; how to learn; and how to get along with others.<\/p>\n<p>The Second Step Program is an evidence based curriculum that we are using to teach critical social and emotional skills. There are four main target areas that are taught through the Second Step Program; Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management and Problem Solving. \u00a0In the Skills for Learning unit, scholars gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully and be assertive when asking for help with schoolwork. In the Empathy unit, scholars learn to identify and understand their own and others feelings. Scholars also learn how to take another\u2019s perspective and how to show compassion. During our Emotion Management unit,\u00a0 scholars learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger. Lastly, in our Problem Solving unit scholars learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way. [\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>BCCS-G MORAL FOCUS OVERVIEW<\/h2>\n<p>In an effort to more effectively integrate the teaching of our scholar values and character education into school culture we have created monthly school wide assemblies for the school year.
